Personal Life

I am originally from Chennai (Tamil Nadu, INDIA) currently pursuing my graduate studies at Oklahoma State University (OSU), Stillwater.

On-line hobbies

I am an amateur web designer/developer. I have done a lot of CSS styling for content management systems (CMS) like Drupal. Before coming across Drupal I was using Wordpress as my primary blog/website.

Website development is one of my hobbies which I have pursued with commitment. I started developing static website from 1998. My first project was a static HTML website for a non-profit organization, Vaduvur Sri Rama Bhakta Sabha, in India. I was helping my brother in that project. Later on I started developing dynamic website using open-source or free scripts mostly from CGI-Resource Index. Most of my inital scripts were in Perl using CGI. When I was in my second year in college, I developed a website for my association (Mechanical Engineers Association of Hindustan College of Engineering). After coming to the US I signed up for a great offer from 1and1 web hosting for a three years free professional preview package. In early 2004 they gave me 500MB webspace with LAMP hosting on a shared server. That is when I started (started and not writing) using PHP scripts. Even though I would love to write my own scripts I do not have enough time to spend on them. With a lot of good open-source projects under development I do not feel compelled to spend time on writing my own scripts

I am more of a designer than a developer, infact I have done no development. I have been using open-source or free scripts from CGI-Resource Index and PHP-Resource Index. After reading some books on CSS, I have started to design or theme CMS systems in Spring 2006. I started of with Wordpress. My previous website was based on a Wordpress theme called FastTrack by Sadish Balasubramanian. I modified the original theme and redesigned my whole website including static webpages around that theme. I was also able to redesign the gallery theme Siruix around the FastTrack theme. Right now I have stopped theming all together.

I am starting to get involved in the Fedora project. After using Fedora Core 6 for 4 months I decided to give back to the linux community. I am starting of with some testing and also trying to be an ambassador. I contribute to the Fedora FreeMedia program. Starting July 2008 I will coordinate the Fedora FreeMedia program for United States. Some time soon I would like to start a LUG at OSU.

I also try to maintain a blog. Initially I wanted it to be a linkblog where I would share the intersting websites that I came across. But now it has evolved a little to become something more than a linkblog. The topics which I usually deal with are mostly about technology, career and personal finance. If you have some time to waste you can read it and share your comments.

Off-line hobbies

Apart from my web designing, I like to take photographs. Photography by far has been my most expensive hobby. After I reached Stillwater in 2003, I got my brother's Cannon EOS SLR camera. I even haven't found time to digitize those pictures. In Fall of 2004 I had a opportunity to work as a staff photographer for my university daily, The Daily O'Collegian (o'colly) for a year. I will soon put an album in my gallery to showcase my photography which got published. I worked at O'Colly for two semester before concentrtaing more on my research. In summer of 2007 I was in Europe for research purposes. A ton of pictures from that trip is available in my gallery.

For a brief period of 2 months in Fall 2004, I also learned to play Rugby with the Oklahoma State University Rugby team. It was a gruelling experience but was a lot of fun. I love to play and watch a lot of sports.

Activities at OSU

I am a GPSGA representative of my department. GPSGA stands for Graduate and Professional Student Government Association. It is a student body dedicated to cater the needs of graduate and professional students at OSU.

I got elected as the Vice-President for GPSGA for the academic year 2008 - 2009. I am excited about this leadership position. Recently we decided on having a CMS for our organization and I have been working on a site running Drupal. Hopefully when I get a chance I shall blog about it.
