GNOME 2.20 Released

The latest version of GNOME (GNOME 2.20) was released today. I am a GNOME user and I fell in love with it ever since I started using Linux.

Some of the improvements in the latest release includes new features in Evolution (groupware client), Epiphany (integrated web browser), eog (Eye of GNOME -- a GNOME Image viewer), Evince (document viewer), Totem (movie player for GNOME), Tomboy (note-taking application) and much much more.

  • Evolution:
    • Some of the new features in Evolution include a new attachment warning. If a message containing the word attachment is sent without an attachment, a message window will be raised to alert you that the message has no attachment. It is a simple but a very useful idea.
    • Email notification plugin in now added. I guess we might not need the Mail Notification anymore.
    • A new backup/restore feature is included.
    • A new "Magic Space Bar" support and much much more
  • Epiphany:
    • In the browser a new "smooth scrolling" preference is one of the notable improvements/additions.
  • eog:
    • Eye of GNOME is now expected to be faster and more stable.
    • A new properties dialog to show basic meta information about the images.
  • Evince:
    • The document viewer now lets you enter information in interactive PDF forms.
  • Totem:
    • Now Totem would search for missing codecs and offers new codecs for installation. Of course this may not always be legal depending on your legal country of residence.
  • Tomboy:
    • The notes taking application for GNOME now lets you synchronize using WebDAV or ssh to a remote server.

In another couple of months we can expect to see all these in Fedora 8.
