Evolution and Microsoft Exchange 2007
Evolution is a great email client (groupware client) for Linux and is a GNOME application. I have been using it for my pop accounts, IMAP accounts as well as my Microsoft exchange server account. It has been working like a charm so far.
Last week my school switched to Microsoft Exchange Server 2007. They gave us a 3 day notice and just like that switched to the 2007 exchange server. Having used evolution-exchange for so long and knowing the fact that exchange 2007 has been in the wild for some time, I assumed that Evolution would support it. So I did not do my homework to look for evolution-exchange support for exchange server 2007.
Thursday when I opened Evolution it automatically crashed as soon I entered the GNOME keyring password. I figured it was because of the new mail server and so I decided to disable the account. But I did not know how to do it from the command line since Evolution would not start. I was finally able to disable the account after starting Evolution without having it to crash.
With the exchange account disabled I was searching the web to see if I can get Evolution to work with exchange server 2007. Apparently the answer is no. Some say it may not happen at all, but an Evolution developer feels that it would happen as soon as 2.14 release of Evolution.
I love Evolution so much that I hate to wait for its next release. I guess I would be using my school email account as an IMAP account instead of an Exchange account. I really hope that Evolution 2.14 will have the much needed support for Exchange Server 2007.
Update: Suman from evolution-list pointed me to a thread about MAPI based plugin which would support Evolution 2007.
