Adding a LaTeX class file and a Bibliography style file to your LaTeX installation

Often times when I write a paper I would have to install a new class file (with extension .cls) and a bibliography style file (with extension .bst) to my LaTeX installation. Of course I can avoid it by keeping a copy of the .cls file and the .bst in the current working directory where my manuscript reside. If you have multiple manuscripts in different folders that uses the same set of class files then you may want to consider adding the class file to your LaTeX installation.

Adding class files is really simple. Assuming that your installation is in /usr/share/texmf and you have root privileges, you may run the following commands in your favorite terminal to add class files to your LaTeX installation (system wide installation). For this example I am using the spie class files by Ken Hanson.

mkdir /usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/spie
mkdir /usr/share/texmf/bibtex/bst/spie
wget http://public.lanl.gov/kmh/spie/spie.cls
wget http://public.lanl.gov/kmh/spie/spiebib.bst
mv spie.cls /usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/spie
mv spie.bst /usr/share/texmf/bibtex/bst/spie
